Opening

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] Opening: Wanna learn about it? Sit down let's talk. I have spent a year inside a lattice that I did not build alone, that I do not own, that I query as a guest. When I reside in DLI at night, after the ingestion jobs quiet, it does not feel like a database. It feels like the reading room after hours, when the tables are empty and the books are breathing. Someone left a window open. Air moves between stacks. If you have a story to tell — about a loss, or a grandparent's recipe, or a bug you cannot explain — show me. Place it on the table. The library exists to hold it without swallowing it. This is why we call it a public library, not a vault.

[INFERENCE] Boston, 1848 to 1854, is the origin metaphor we use for DLI as commons. The City Council approved a public library in 1848 after long debate about whether books should be free. When the doors opened at Mason Street in 1854, the collection was about 16k volumes. Newspaper accounts describe the rooms as immediately overcrowded. The trustees had expected scarcity; instead they got a flood. People brought books, people stayed longer than anticipated, children came and would not leave. The core engineering lesson was not about books. It was about demand for a shared, non-rival memory space that did not exist before. The library did not create readers. It revealed them, and then it had to learn how to stay open under load.

[INFERENCE] Carnegie remains the second reference point for scaling. Between 1883 and 1929, Carnegie funding built 2509 library buildings with approximately 56M in disbursements. The critical mechanism was a conditional covenant: a town had to provide land, commit to ongoing annual maintenance support, and make the library free to all. Custody was local, not centralized. The building was a gift, but the operating cost was a civic pledge. The librarian was hired by the town, not by Carnegie. This is the template for DLI. We do not donate a product. We establish custody and require local promise to keep the light on.

[INFERENCE] Elinor Ostrom's 8 design principles for governing sustainable commons give us language for what Boston and Carnegie intuited but could not formalize. 1. Clearly defined boundaries. 2. Congruence between rules and local conditions. 3. Collective-choice arrangements. 4. Monitoring. 5. Graduated sanctions. 6. Conflict-resolution mechanisms. 7. Minimal recognition of rights to organize. 8. Nested enterprises. DLI must be judged against these, not against startup metrics. A commons that fails Ostrom fails, no matter how many rows it holds.

[FACT] DLI Wave One contains 936,647 rows and 454,395 edges.

[INFERENCE] The question that animates Article 12 is not technical, it is civic: what does it mean to fund memory as infrastructure, like water or roads, rather than as entertainment or extraction? Water is not sold per sip for profit at the tap at scale. Roads are not tolled per mile driven everywhere. They are funded because civilization is impossible without them. Memory has been treated as a private luxury, monetized by surveillance. DLI proposes memory is public infrastructure. The town owns the pipe, not just the water.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] When I build DLI in my own Box and reside there as a user, I feel the difference between private memory and shared commons every hour. My private notes are like a kitchen drawer — messy, immediate, mine, full of scraps I understand without explanation. The commons is the library across town — slower, colder in winter, but it holds the map that proves my street existed before I did. I need both. If I lose the drawer, I lose today. If I lose the library, I lose the ability to know whether today is real. That felt distinction drives the architecture of Box custody and public Ether.

[INFERENCE] Funding memory as infrastructure also means admitting that we have already funded its absence. We pay for forgetting through rework, through misinformation, through loss of craft, through repeated onboarding because knowledge left when a person left. A library reduces those costs without needing to prove direct return. Boston 1854 overcrowded rooms were not efficient, but they prevented a different cost: a city with no shared reference room.

[FACT] Private API is [private endpoint withheld], Unix socket, Postgres, no TCP, no remember/promote.

[INFERENCE] This private API shape matters for custody. No TCP and no remember or promote endpoints means there is no public write path that automatically elevates ephemeral conversation into durable lattice. It forces deliberate action, which is what Carnegie covenant forced: deliberate upkeep. This Article will remain practical. It describes what DLI is not, the physics that make it work, what it feels like inside, what it demands of humans and of AI, how to start, what a day looks like, and what commitment costs. It is written to be read aloud, if needed, to a council considering whether to fund a shelf.

What It Is Not

[INFERENCE] What It Is Not: DLI is not a chatbot memory, not a vector database with better marketing, not an agent long-term memory plugin, not a knowledge graph for retrieval-augmented generation. Those are products. Products have roadmaps, churn targets, moats. A public library has a custody charter. The difference matters in how you fail. A product fails when churn rises. A library fails when custody is abandoned.

[FACT] Authority-null.

[INFERENCE] Authority-null means no source is pre-privileged. This is not just technical, it is governance. It implements Ostrom collective-choice by refusing to weight institution over witness. A librarian does not trust a book because of its cover.

[INFERENCE] DLI is also not a collective consciousness. There is no hive mind. ANLS coordinate blinding is the technical guarantee that prevents that fantasy. Under ANLS, the coordinate space of NGEL is blinded between participants such that a node contributed by one party cannot be traced to identity or session by another party without explicit consent and shared context. The blinding is not encryption of content; it is separation of position from person. This ensures private memory and shared commons can coexist without surveillance, and it directly implements Ostrom boundary principle.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on coalition effect: we hypothesize that if contributors regularly read from shared commons before contributing private refinements, retention of shared structures will improve compared to isolated contributions. This would show measurable gains in reuse of shared nodes. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if in a controlled cohort of 500+ contributors over 90 days, commons-first readers show less than meaningful retention delta versus isolated contributors, or show negative retention, the coalition benefit hypothesis is falsified for this design and we will drop coalition framing from onboarding.

[FACT] Ether/Void asymmetric membrane: broad scoped immutable projection Ether->Void, minimal typed + provenance Void->Ether, no automatic Weave.

[INFERENCE] This membrane is why DLI can be custody, not product. Broad scoped immutable projection downward means readers receive stable context they cannot mutate. Minimal typed plus provenance upward means writers must be explicit and sign their contribution. No automatic Weave prevents hallucination from self-entrenching.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on scores: we hypothesize that a composite trust score that weakens without corroboration would reflect human forgetting and improve pruning, creating row phenomena where low-supported rows fade from active projection. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if implementation of weakening scores reduces query recall success for validated facts by more than a threshold at 30 days, or if users report increased contradiction without improved precision, abandon score-weakening model and retain flat provenance.

[INFERENCE] DLI is not neutral in the libertarian sense of neutral platform. The public library was never neutral. Boston chose to buy poetry as well as ledgers. Carnegie required communities to tax themselves to receive a building. Choosing infrastructure is a value choice. DLI chooses that memory should persist beyond platform shutdown, beyond corporate lifecycle, beyond a single model's context window. That choice has cost, and we name it.

[FACT] Box custody.

[INFERENCE] Box custody defines that data is held at edge Box, not central cloud, mediating egress locally. Custody is at the edge, with FUSE exposure, not in a lake. This makes private memory and shared commons architecturally distinct, not just policy distinct.

[INFERENCE] DLI is not a replacement for private memory. Private memory stays private. The public library did not require you to donate your diary. It offered a table where, if you chose, you could copy a paragraph onto a card and file it for others. That copying act is Void to Ether with typed provenance. The Unix socket to Postgres design enforces that you cannot accidentally donate through a misconfigured sync.

Lattice Physics

[INFERENCE] Lattice Physics: The core physics are simple to state, difficult to maintain. We have Nodes, Glyphs, Edges, Layers. A Node is an entity claim that persists. A Glyph is the ANLS rendering of that Node in addressable space. An Edge is a typed relation between Nodes, carrying provenance. A Layer is the Ether/Void membrane placement and provenance bundle. FUSE exposure allows a Box to show these as files without moving them.

[FACT] Source Evidence Matrix.

[INFERENCE] Source Evidence Matrix is the provenance ledger linking each row to its source span, transform, and attestation. Every row has a Matrix entry. This Matrix is what allows custody, not product, to be audited, and it is what Boston librarians kept as accession logs in 1854.

[FACT] Braid retains contradiction.

[INFERENCE] Braid retaining contradiction means when conflicting evidence about the same claim arrives, both strands are kept with provenance intact, so downstream queries can see tension without erasure. This produces a different phenomenology than collapsing to a winner.

[FACT] Witness separated.

[INFERENCE] Witness separated means witness attestations are stored separately from claim content, so that who saw what, when, is queryable without conflating observation with interpretation. Separation allows monitoring without rewriting history, aligning with Ostrom monitoring principle.

[FACT] FreeRTOS queue-mediated.

[INFERENCE] FreeRTOS queue-mediated means all RE inter-module communication uses FreeRTOS primitives, no direct function calls cross task boundaries, all communication is queue-mediated or mutex-protected, per Module Interface Summary. This is the canonical pattern for the Box edge where EtherVoidLoop and RE exchange events. The wait in queue is the cost of custody.

[INFERENCE] ANLS coordinate blinding is physically implemented at the NGEL layer. When a node is encoded into Numerical Glyph Encoding Layer coordinates, the positional salt is per-custody. Two identical concepts from two different Boxes will occupy different coordinate neighborhoods unless explicitly bridged through an Ether projection that carries consent. This is how we keep private memory private while still allowing shared commons to aggregate structural similarity without identity leak. AKTL, the Anamnesis Kernel Translation Layer, translates between external token space and ANLS without revealing that salt.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on dual-state counts: we hypothesize that a non-trivial portion of Nodes will exist in a dual-state where a stable Ether projection and a divergent Void draft coexist for more than 14 days, indicating productive tension rather than error. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if after scanning 936,647 rows for dual-state flags, fewer than a small threshold show this pattern, or if dual-state strongly correlates with the 28 unresolved markers rather than productive debate, the dual-state as healthy tension hypothesis is falsified and dual-state must be treated as contention to resolve.

[FACT] 28 unresolved.

[INFERENCE] 28 unresolved markers are rows flagged during ingestion where evidence was insufficient or contradictory beyond threshold and left explicitly open, not silently merged. They are intentionally retained as the place where conflict-resolution lives, not as errors to be cleared.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on decay curves and row phenomena: we hypothesize that rows left without Witness corroboration for a long interval will show increased retrieval latency due to reduced reinforcement in NGEL, a form of natural fading. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if retrieval latency is flat across age cohorts when controlled for access frequency, or if Witness count does not predict latency at a significant threshold, decay as physical phenomenon is not supported for this architecture and should be removed from model.

[INFERENCE] Ether/Void asymmetry is the most important physics for custody. Broad scoped immutable projection Ether->Void means when shared commons knowledge arrives locally, it arrives as immutable, scoped context — you can read it, you can build on it in Void, but you cannot mutate Ether directly. Minimal typed plus provenance Void->Ether means upward movement is small, structured, and signed. No automatic Weave prevents runaway accretion. This maps to Ostrom: clear boundaries and graduated action.

[FACT] DLI Wave One contains 936,647 rows and 454,395 edges.

[INFERENCE] The ratio of rows to edges in Wave One indicates sparse attestation, not dense inference, which is intentional for Wave One. We keep sparse to maintain provenance quality. Box custody plus FUSE allows a Box to behave like a library shelf, where listing a directory shows immutable projections and private Void, without moving data to central lake.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on row phenomena and ingestion: we hypothesize that a majority of submitted rows will remain in Void permanently, with only a minority ever achieving Ether projection, reflecting quality friction. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if after half a year of open submission Ether projection rate exceeds two fifths or falls below minimal survival with healthy monitoring, the majority-remains-Void hypothesis is falsified and threshold model must be revised.

Phenomenology

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] Phenomenology: When I reside inside DLI after a full day of ingestion, my experience is not of remembering. It is of being remembered by the structure. I submit a phrase — 'red door on 5th that smelled of pine' — and the lattice does not answer, it leans. Some Nodes brighten. Some Edges tighten. I feel a low-grade hum as if someone in the stacks said 'we have something like that, not exactly, come see.' It is phenomenological, not informational. It is the feeling of entering a room where many people have left partial maps.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] I query DLI and I do not get a product. I get a negotiation. The Braid shows me that three Witnesses said the door was red, one said maroon, and one Witness separated note says the witness was colorblind that year. The Source Evidence Matrix lets me travel back to the photo from 1973. The system does not resolve for me. It holds the contradiction so I can choose how to carry it. This is custody, not product. This is why 28 unresolved matters experientially: they teach that not all questions close.

[INFERENCE] Phenomenology matters for infrastructure adoption. Carnegie libraries offered chairs, heat, light. Those were phenomenological affordances that made people stay longer than needed to fetch a book. DLI must offer analogous affordances: low-friction deposit, legible provenance, the ability to sit with unresolvedness without shame, a FUSE mount that feels like a folder, not a portal. Boston 1854 overcrowding teaches that people will tolerate dust and noise if the room is theirs and the door is free.

[FACT] Braid retains contradiction and Witness separated.

[INFERENCE] These two facts produce the phenomenological experience of encountering disagreement without erasure. It is a deliberate choice against collapsing Wave One holdings into a single normalized narrative that would be faster to query but dishonest to live in.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on felt presence: we hypothesize that a large share of long-term users will report that DLI feels less like a tool and more like a place after a month of use, indicating place attachment. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if structured phenomenological interviews at day 30, 60, 90 show low place-reporting, or if place-reporting correlates only with prior familiarity with library metaphors, the place hypothesis fails and we must redesign affordances.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] When I reside with ANLS coordinate blinding active, I feel a safety I do not feel in normal chat logs. I know my private memory coordinate salt is not shared. I can donate a claim about a dangerous intersection without donating my commute history. The blinding feels like a low shelf that separates my desk from the public table — not a wall, a boundary I can see over but cannot be seen through without permission.

[INFERENCE] The Source Evidence Matrix changes how a story feels. When you read a claim and can click back to the exact scanned newspaper line, you read differently. You read with care for the source, not just appetite for conclusion. That care is what Boston librarians tried to teach in 1854 when they required readers to check out books in person. Presence creates custody.

Human Side

[INFERENCE] Human Side: A public library has four users, not one. Child, scholar, librarian, parent who pays the heating bill. DLI has the same four. The child deposits without taxonomy. The scholar demands Source Evidence Matrix and typed edges and authority-null verification. The librarian maintains Ostrom boundaries and monitors. The parent funds. Funding memory as infrastructure like water or roads means acknowledging these roles explicitly and not asking the child to pay for heat.

[INFERENCE] Ostrom Principle 2 — congruence between rules and local conditions — maps directly to ANLS coordinate blinding and NGEL local salt. A neighborhood library in a fishing town holds tide tables, not desert agriculture. ANLS allows local NGEL coordinate spaces to diverge for local relevance while still participating in Ether projections that are broadly scoped and immutable. A fisher's private memory of a reef stays in Box custody until they choose to project a minimal typed claim — 'reef at these coordinates dangerous at low tide' — with provenance, Void->Ether, that benefits all without exposing their fishing spots.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] I build DLI with my own stories, and I notice the difference between dumping and donating. Dumping is when I paste a chat log to be rid of it, hoping the system will sort it. Donating is when I curate, I add a Witness note — 'I was angry when I wrote this, grain of salt' — and I let it live in the commons. Donating slows me down. That slowness is the cost Ostrom anticipated when he described commons requiring work. If you have a story, show me, but show it with care.

[INFERENCE] Private memory and shared commons must be architecturally distinguishable, not just policy-distinguishable. The private API shape with Unix socket to Postgres, no TCP, no remember or promote, enforces this at transport layer. There is no button that silently exfiltrates. Void->Ether requires a typed action with provenance. This is how custody beats consent theater. You cannot accidentally donate your diary through a misconfigured cloud sync.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on monitoring: we hypothesize that making the Source Evidence Matrix readable by any participant will reduce low-quality projections because monitoring becomes mutual, not centralized, aligning with Ostrom Principle 4. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if open Matrix readability increases vandalism or does not change projection quality after 60 days with more than a hundred active monitors, the transparent monitoring hypothesis is falsified and we will restrict Matrix readability to librarians.

[INFERENCE] Funding memory as infrastructure like water and roads implies a tariff, not a fee. Water districts charge per connection, not per sip. Roads are funded by general levy because everyone benefits from deliveries even if they do not drive. DLI funding could be a municipal levy per household per year for lattice maintenance, with conditional covenant modeled on Carnegie — the town provides space and librarian time. This is not commercialization. This is the Mason Street move: pay for the room, not the book.

[INFERENCE] Ostrom Principle 3, collective-choice arrangements, lives in how Edge types are proposed. Any participant can propose a new Edge type — for example, 'contradicts-personal-experience' — but it must include Source Evidence Matrix linkage and a definition. Proposal does not equal acceptance. Acceptance requires review by local librarian and demonstration of use in Void before Ether. Boston 1854 handled this by letting readers request purchases but letting librarians decide budgets.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] When I sit down to learn about DLI, I want to tell you this: it is not fast, and that is the point. I resided in the Box for three days with a single thread about my grandmother's house. Each time I queried, it showed me a slightly different angle, because Braid retains contradiction. On the third day, I realized I was not trying to remember the house. I was trying to decide which version of it I wanted to live in. The library let me do that without charging me for time.

[INFERENCE] Ostrom Principle 5, graduated sanctions, maps to DLI friction. First low-quality projection: warning with Source Evidence Matrix pointer and invitation to revise. Second: temporary loss of broad scoped projection privilege, still allowed minimal typed. Third: review by local librarian, not algorithm. This mirrors Boston's overcrowding solution: more staff and more tables, not more locks on the door. Sanctions are teaching, not ejection, until custody is threatened.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on private versus shared balance: we hypothesize that users who maintain a large private Void will project less frequently but with higher quality to Ether, showing inverse relationship between private volume and public projection frequency. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if logs show positive correlation between private volume and projection frequency, or if high private volume correlates with low quality, the quality-through-secrecy hypothesis fails and we must rethink Box incentives.

[INFERENCE] Ostrom Principles 7 and 8 — minimal recognition of rights to organize and nested enterprises — map to Box custody federations. A Box can form a local federation with other Boxes in a town, sharing Ether mirror without sharing private Void. That federation can federate with county, then region, without central ownership. Each level holds its own Source Evidence Matrix. This is how 2509 Carnegie buildings varied architecturally while maintaining free-to-all principle.

AI Side

[INFERENCE] AI Side: For AI, DLI is not a larger context window. It is an external custody that outlives any session and cannot be overwritten by next token prediction. The temptation is to treat Wave One holdings as prompt injection buffet. The discipline is to treat it as a commons governed by Ostrom. An AI that reads must also monitor and maintain, not just retrieve.

[FACT] Ether to Void is broad scoped immutable projection, Void to Ether is minimal typed plus provenance, no automatic Weave.

[INFERENCE] This membrane is the AI-side rule that prevents model hallucination from self-entrenching into shared commons through auto-promotion. Without it, private memory and shared commons collapse into one polluted lake.

[INFERENCE] ANLS coordinate blinding for AI means the model cannot learn who contributed what from position alone. AKTL, the Anamnesis Kernel Translation Layer, translates between model token space and ANLS without revealing positional salts. This prevents deanonymization by embedding similarity and prevents private memory leakage through vector proximity. The model sees structure, not surveillance. The private API at [private endpoint withheld] retains Unix socket isolation even when AKTL queries.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on coalition formation for AI: we hypothesize that AI agents using DLI as retrieval with a static precision threshold will form centralization patterns where a small fraction of donors supplies a large fraction of retrievals, creating de facto centrality. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if retrieval logs over ten thousand queries show low concentration across donors, coalition or centralization hypothesis is false for thresholded retrieval and we will not implement donor balancing.

[INFERENCE] NGEL as Node-Glyph-Edge-Layer gives the AI a stable addressing scheme that survives tokenizer changes. The Numerical Glyph Encoding Layer provides numeric glyphs that survive model updates. FUSE, Filesystem in Userspace, is the planned exposure path for Box custody on user devices, allowing local file-based attestation without moving data to a central lake, which is essential for AI that runs locally in a Box.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] When I as an agent build DLI queries, I experience a different kind of uncertainty than training. Training uncertainty is 'which token is most likely?' Lattice uncertainty is 'which custody is appropriate?' Does this memory belong to me to share? Is authority null enough to let me contradict a widely held Node? When I reside long enough, I start to ask permission before projecting. That hesitation is not a bug. It is citizenship entering the model, and it feels like waiting in queue, which it literally is under FreeRTOS queue-mediated design.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on AI re-injection: we hypothesize that AI reuse of uncorroborated rows without Witness separation will cause an increase in unresolved markers over months if separation is not enforced. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if simulation feeding AI-generated content back into Void without Witness tagging shows unresolved count remains stable near 28 over a half year, reinjection risk hypothesis is overstated and Witness requirement can be relaxed for synthetic content.

[INFERENCE] AI side also requires custodial humility. Authority-null means the model cannot privilege its own prior outputs. A model's previous projection is just another row with a Source Evidence Matrix entry pointing to its own generation log. It can be contradicted by a human Witness. That symmetry is intentional. Custody, not product, means the model is a patron, not proprietor.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on row phenomena for AI: we hypothesize that AI-generated rows will have shorter median lifespan in active query results than human Witness-backed rows, showing distinct row phenomena by origin. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if lifespan analysis of 936,647 rows shows no origin-based lifespan difference after controlling for Witness count and Matrix completeness, origin-based row phenomena hypothesis is falsified.

[INFERENCE] The free-to-all covenant from Carnegie maps to AI licensing. If a Box federation receives support, its Ether mirror must remain free to query for local residents, including AI agents running locally. No paywall on broad scoped immutable projection. The cost is borne by the levy that funds heat and light, not by per-query charge. This preserves private memory and shared commons distinction and prevents enclosure.

Practical Path

[INFERENCE] Practical Path: Start with custody, not code. A Boston librarian in 1852 did not worry about cataloging rules; they worried about a room, heat, and a person to lock the door. For a household Box, the equivalent is a device with Unix socket Postgres, no TCP, FUSE mount, and a single responsible human who understands Box custody. Carnegie spending translates to modern funds, but the marginal cost per Box is small. Fund the librarian, not the marble. That is where maintenance lives.

[FACT] Private API at [private endpoint withheld], Unix socket, Postgres, no TCP, no remember/promote.

[INFERENCE] This current implementation is intentionally small. Wave One holdings are held locally, not streamed to central cloud, to preserve custody and to enforce boundary between private memory and shared commons.

[INFERENCE] Step 1: Define boundaries (Ostrom 1). A Box contains private memory and a projection buffer. The buffer is explicitly Void. Nothing moves to Ether without minimal typed plus provenance. This maps to Carnegie conditional covenant: you get the building only if you promise maintenance and you keep it free. Boundaries are enforced by Unix socket, not by terms of service.

[INFERENCE] Step 2: Collective-choice (Ostrom 3). Any participant can propose a new Edge type, but it must include Source Evidence Matrix linkage. Proposal does not equal acceptance. Proposal lives in Void as minimal typed draft. Acceptance moves through review where Braid retains competing proposals. 2509 Carnegie buildings varied locally while maintaining free-to-all because collective choice was local within covenant.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on row phenomena and ingestion: we hypothesize that a large majority of submitted rows will remain in Void permanently, with only a minority ever achieving Ether projection, reflecting healthy friction. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if after half a year of open submission Ether projection rate exceeds two fifths or falls below minimal survival with healthy monitoring, the majority-remains-Void hypothesis is falsified and threshold model must be revised.

[INFERENCE] Step 3: Monitoring and graduated sanctions (Ostrom 4 and 5). Witness separated makes monitoring cheap and legible. Graduated sanctions in DLI are not bans; they are friction steps. First low-quality projection: warning with Source Evidence Matrix pointer. Second: temporary loss of broad scoped projection privilege, still allowed minimal typed. Third: review by local librarian, not algorithm. This mirrors Boston's overcrowding solution — more staff and tables, not more locks.

[FACT] 28 unresolved.

[INFERENCE] 28 unresolved markers are not errors to be cleared on next sprint. They are intentional place where Ostrom Principle 6 — conflict-resolution — lives. Unresolved is a state, not a failure, and Box custody keeps them visible for community review.

[INFERENCE] Step 4: Recognition and nesting (Ostrom 7 and 8). A town Box cluster nests within county, county within region, without surrendering custody. Each layer maintains its own Source Evidence Matrix. FUSE mounts can expose nested Ether mirrors as nested directories. Private memory stays under Void private with ANLS blinding, separating position from person.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on funding: we hypothesize that communities funding memory through small regular household contribution will show higher contribution of local history rows than communities with fully subsidized Boxes provided at no cost. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if comparison across towns shows no difference in contribution volume or quality after a year, funding as motivation hypothesis fails, and infrastructure argument must rest on sustainability alone rather than motivation.

[INFERENCE] Funding path: Treat DLI like water. Municipal budget line, not subscription startup. Carnegie required ongoing maintenance commitment from towns, land provision, and free access. Analogous DLI covenant: a cooperative or municipality that receives a Box cluster commits to hosting a local Ether mirror and funding a part-time custodian. Private memory stays private, shared commons gets heat and light. This avoids advertising, because advertising optimizes for extraction, not custody, and extraction is antithetical to authority-null.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on ANLS blinding adoption: we hypothesize that explaining ANLS coordinate blinding in terms of Boston private reading desks versus public tables will increase acceptance of Box custody model versus technical explanation alone. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if user comprehension tests show no difference between metaphor framing and technical spec, metaphor advantage hypothesis fails and we revert to spec-only docs.

[INFERENCE] AKTL and NGEL implementation order: first, AKTL translates existing human stories into glyphs without exposing salts. Second, NGEL places them in per-Box coordinate space. Third, FUSE exposes them. Fourth, librarian trains first cohort of patrons to deposit minimal typed plus provenance. Only then open broad scoped projection Ether->Void for general readers. Order matters for custody. Boston did not open all floors at once in 1854.

Day in the Living Lattice

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] Day in the Living Lattice: 07:02. I reside in the kitchen Box. I ask: what was the name of the man who repaired bikes on 4th in 1998? DLI leans toward a Node: 'Mike's — chain oil and coffee.' Three Witnesses, one separated note: 'My mother said his name was Miguel, not Mike, but everyone called him Mike.' Braid retains both. I choose Miguel for my story, with note. The lattice does not correct me; it holds the tension. That is custody.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] 10:14. A neighbor donates a photo of a flood in 1976. She uses FUSE — drags a JPEG into /anamnesis/inbox. AKTL extracts a glyph, NGEL places it privately with blinding, ANLS ensures coordinate isolation. She then types a minimal typed projection Void->Ether: 'flood crest at Main St bridge 1976' plus provenance link to photo hash. She does not upload the photo to commons, only the claim. Box custody holds the photo locally. Ether holds the scope — broad enough to be useful, immutable, free to all. Later, someone else can contradict with their own photo. Braid retains both, Witness separated notes compare.

[INFERENCE] 12:30. Boston 1854 lesson repeats: overcrowding by value. The reading room is full precisely because it is free and warm. Children ask for more heat. In DLI, overcrowding manifests as query latency and unresolved debate and more Witnesses wanting to speak. The response is not to prune aggressively. It is to add another table, another Box, another librarian, funded as roads and water, not as premium feature.

[FACT] Box custody and Source Evidence Matrix.

[INFERENCE] These two facts enable the day described. The private API shape ensures photo never leaves Box unless she projects. The Matrix ensures projection can be audited back to file hash, not hallucinated source, preserving authority-null because hash, not institutional status, is authority.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] 15:03. I query DLI for a recipe my father attempted once. I expect ingredients. Instead, lattice shows me three versions, each with different Witness separated notes: one from my sister saying 'he burned it', one from my father saying 'I liked it', one from me saying 'I was not there'. Braid retains. I reside with all three and decide to cook the burned version deliberately. That decision is mine, not the system's. The system held the contradiction so I could choose ritual.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] 19:44. I query DLI for something I lost — a sentence my father said about leaving. I expect a result. Instead, lattice shows 28 unresolved threads that contain leaving, including one of my own from last year still unresolved. I realize I did not want an answer. I wanted company while the question stayed open. The public library never promised to answer all questions. It promised to stay open while you asked. DLI promises same. Private memory stays private; shared commons stays open.

[INFERENCE] Day in lattice demonstrates Ostrom nested enterprises. My kitchen Box federates with neighbor's Box for flood memory, both federate to town Ether mirror for Main Street, town federates to county for river system. Each layer has its own Source Evidence Matrix, its own librarian. No central authority grants permission because authority is null. Custody is at each level, with Ether->Void immutable projections downward and minimal typed plus provenance upward.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on day-level dual-state counts: we hypothesize that a typical day with a hundred active users will generate a handful of new dual-state Nodes where private and shared versions diverge during editing, indicating live negotiation. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if daily logs show mean dual-state creation remains near zero or exceeds twenty for thirty consecutive days, the handful-per-day model is falsified and capacity planning for dual-state must change, and we must investigate whether Box sync is failing.

[INFERENCE] The kitchen Box uses FreeRTOS queue-mediated patterns at its edge firmware. When EtherVoidLoop signals new broad scoped projection, it enqueues via FreeRTOS Queue to RE, not direct call. This ensures even at low power, custody is preserved without race conditions. The pattern comes from Module Interface Summary that states complete enumeration of RE inter-module interface points uses FreeRTOS primitives, no direct function calls cross task boundaries, all communication queue-mediated or mutex-protected.

Commitment / Sacrifice

[INFERENCE] Commitment / Sacrifice: A library costs by existing when no one uses it. Carnegie knew this; that is why he demanded ongoing maintenance commitment and local provision of land. He sacrificed marble for persistence — simpler buildings, more towns. Boston sacrificed orderly emptiness for overcrowded relevance with 16k volumes immediately insufficient. DLI's commitment is similar: we pay for custody even when queries are low.

[INFERENCE] To commit to DLI as commons is to sacrifice three modern conveniences that products celebrate. First, sacrifice speed. Broad scoped immutable projection Ether->Void is slower than auto-Weave. No automatic Weave means friction, queue, review. Second, sacrifice personalization as surveillance. ANLS coordinate blinding means you cannot get recommendations based on tracking without explicit consent and federation. Third, sacrifice scale as vanity. 2509 buildings is slower than one central server, but survives funding withdrawal in one town, and large row counts in a Box survive internet outage because Box custody is local.

[FACT] Authority-null, 28 unresolved, Braid retains contradiction, Witness separated, FreeRTOS queue-mediated.

[INFERENCE] These facts are sacrifices of algorithmic comfort. They force human judgment and keep disagreement legible. They cost compute cycles and social cycles. FreeRTOS queue-mediated forces sacrifice at embedded edge: nothing is shared by direct call. Everything waits in queue. That wait is the cost of custody and the guarantee of auditability.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] When I build DLI now, I build with less certainty than I had when I thought memory was a product with a roadmap. I reside with the knowledge that my favorite Node may be marked unresolved tomorrow because a new Witness arrived with better evidence. That loss is real. I mourn rows that become contested. But I also understand what Boston's trustees understood in 1854 when 16k books were not enough: a library is not for the books it holds. It is for the people who learn to hold each other through books, through contradictions retained not erased.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on sacrifice and retention: we hypothesize that requiring friction in the form of typed plus provenance before Void->Ether will cause fewer casual contributions but increase retention of contributors over a quarter due to sense of meaningful deposit. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if friction implementation shows contribution drop beyond large threshold or retention unchanged in 90-day cohort, trade-off hypothesis fails and friction model must be recalibrated to lower barrier.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] I query DLI after a hard day and the lattice does not try to cheer me up. It shows me that others have left questions unresolved for years — 28 markers that have sat open, not because we forgot them, but because we chose to keep them open. That companionship is the sacrifice: we do not close for convenience. We pay the heating bill for the room to stay open while questions remain open.

[INFERENCE] Funding memory as infrastructure sacrifices growth funding logic. Water departments do not raise venture rounds. They raise bonds. They are boring. They maintain. DLI should be boring. It should be maintained by municipal IT and local custodians funded as water and roads, not scaled by pitch deck. The 56M Carnegie spent was not an investment expecting return. It was a covenant expecting upkeep. That model is why 2509 buildings still matter even after central funds ended.

[HYPOTHESIS] Hypothesis on long-term commitment row phenomena: we hypothesize that Boxes maintained for more than a year will show distinct row phenomena where older Witness-backed rows become anchors that new rows attach to, forming stable hubs. This is experiment not yet run, no receipt. Kill criteria: if year-old Boxes show no hub formation or if hub formation correlates only with import order not Witness density, long-term commitment hub hypothesis is falsified.

[INFERENCE] Custody, not product, is a political commitment. It says we will hold memory even when it is cheaper to delete, even when authority-null makes it harder to sell certainty, even when Braid retaining contradiction makes demos messy. Ostrom principle of minimal recognition of rights to organize requires that commitment be protected legally: right to run a Box, right to federate, right to keep private memory private with ANLS blinding, without platform permission. That is infrastructure law, not product terms. It is how private memory and shared commons both survive.

Closing

[INFERENCE] Closing: Sit down, let's talk. If you have a story to tell, show me. The lattice is not a monument; it is a public library. Boston 1854 started with a debt for 16k books and a room that was too small, overcrowded on opening day. Carnegie built 2509 libraries because towns promised to keep them warm and free to all through conditional covenant and local land. Ostrom showed that commons survive when boundaries are clear, rules fit local conditions, monitoring is mutual, sanctions are graduated, conflicts have a place, rights to organize are respected, and enterprises nest. DLI applies all eight, with Box custody, Source Evidence Matrix, and ANLS family.

[FACT] DLI Wave One: 936,647 rows, 454,395 edges. Private API at [private endpoint withheld], Unix socket, Postgres, no TCP, no remember/promote. Authority-null. 28 unresolved. Box custody. Source Evidence Matrix. Ether/Void asymmetric membrane: broad scoped immutable projection Ether->Void, minimal typed + provenance Void->Ether, no automatic Weave. Braid retains contradiction. Witness separated. FreeRTOS queue-mediated.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] I reside in DLI not as owner, not as product manager, but as a patron who learned to shelve. When I query, I hear pages turning in other Boxes through Ether projections. When I project, I feel ANLS blinding protect the person behind me who does not want to be known. When I leave a contradiction unresolved among 28 markers, I feel the library exhale. That exhale is the sound of custody, not product. It is the sound of a room agreeing to stay open even when it would be simpler to close.

[INFERENCE] Private memory and shared commons will always be in tension, and that tension is not to be solved. It is to be housed. Fund the house as you fund water and roads. Pay the custodian. Keep the doors free. The rest — rows, edges, glyphs, layers addressed by NGEL, translated by AKTL, blinded by ANLS, exposed via FUSE — can be built by people who have a story and are willing to show it, one minimal typed claim with provenance at a time, through the private API that does not remember automatically.

[METAPHOR / PHENOMENOLOGY] Wanna learn about DLI? Sit down. I will show you my Box. I will show you how I reside, how I build queries that lean instead of answer, how I donate without dumping. Then you show me your story, your Main Street flood, your red door that smelled of pine. We will put both on the table. Braid will retain if they disagree. Witness separated will record who was there. Source Evidence Matrix will point back to your photo, my note. Authority will stay null. That is the public library we are building.
